Tracheostomy is the oldest surgical procedure used to treat sleep apnea. It was a popular solution in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
This technique works very well. However, due to its important side effects it is rarely used nowadays.
Patient’s with tracheostomies may experience serious complications such as tracheal stenosis, damage to the larynx and vocal cords, infections, airway obstruction due to secretions and more.
